Treatment may include

Strength training

Muscle weakness is common in many neurological conditions and can affect daily activities. The benefits of strength training include increasing muscular strength, endurance, balance, functional performance and cognitive functioning. Our assessment will identify which muscles in your body need to be strengthened and we will provide targeted exercises.

Stretching and positioning

Muscle stiffness, spasticity and spasms can occur with neurological conditions. We can advise you on how best to maintain flexibility, through specific stretches and exercises, as well as ways to position your body to prevent muscle and joint stiffness, including advice on specialist splints. We can offer advice on medicines which may help manage spasticity and spasms.

Balance rehabilitation

People with neurological conditions may have difficulties with their balance which can increase the risk of falls. There are many reasons why people may lose their balance or fall. We can assess which factors are contributing to impaired balance and provide treatment to improve your balance and reduce your risk of falling.

Gait training

Gait refers to a person’s walking pattern. Gait depends on a complex interplay between the nervous, musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems. There are many factors that can lead to gait problems. We can assess which areas are contributing to impaired gait and provide treatment to improve your walking.

Postural advice

Posture is the position in which you hold your body while sitting, standing or even lying down. Good posture allows us to stand, sit or lie with minimal effort and without causing strain on our bodies; it also helps us to avoid developing pain and stiffness. We can assess your posture and provide advice and exercises to improve your posture.

Spasticity management

Spasticity and spasms can occur with neurological conditions and are caused by an increase in muscle tone. Muscle tone is the level of tension or resistance to movement in a muscle. Spasticity can make your muscles feel stiff, heavy and difficult to move. Spasms are a sudden tightening of a muscle which can cause a limb to move involuntarily. We can assess you and identify factors that may make your spasticity worse. We can provide advice and treatment on positioning and stretching, and can liaise with your doctor about the medical management of spasticity and spams.

Cardiovascular or aerobic exercise involves exercises which raises your heart rate and make you breathe deeper and faster. This type of exercise helps to improve your cardiovascular health and has many health benefits. We can work with you to improve your cardiovascular fitness, through different types of exercises tailored to your ability.

Optimising function

People with neurological conditions may have difficulties with everyday activities, such as standing up from a chair, carrying items, getting dressed, walking and climbing stairs. We can identify what is leading to these difficulties and provide rehabilitation and recommend equipment that can help aid your independence.

We can provide training to family members and carers to ensure they have the confidence to assist you with managing your condition. This can include showing them how to assist you with positioning, moving about, everyday activities, exercises and using equipment.

Teaching family or carers how to assist you with functional tasks and exercises

We can recommend and refer you for specialist equipment, including:

  • Exercise equipment

  • Walking aids

  • Wheelchairs and other seating

  • Standing frames

  • Equipment to help with activities of daily living

  • Orthotics and insoles

  • Functional Electrical Stimulation
